Book Canter SafariTadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and Sanctuary is counted among the popular national parks of India. This notable tiger destination is situated in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The name ‘Tadoba’ is derived from ‘Taru’, a tribal god deeply revered by the locals. The Andhari river flows through the forest, hence the name Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve.
The tiger reserve is spread across 625.4 sq. km and is the oldest and largest national park in Maharashtra. In 1986, Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary came into existence and was later expanded to include Tadoba National Park. Every year, Tadoba attracts tourists from across India and the world for tiger safaris in its core and buffer zones.
Open 6-seater gypsies traverse the forest of Tadoba and are the most preferred mode for tiger tracking. Jeep safaris are available in both core and buffer zones with morning (6–10 AM) and evening (2–6 PM) slots. Advance booking is strongly recommended.
A larger open safari vehicle ideal for budget travelers and large groups. Canter safaris follow regulated routes in core zones like Moharli and Kolara, offering an affordable way to explore Tadoba's wildlife.
Moharli is the best known tourism zone for tiger spotting, popular for sheltering the highest density of tigers in TATR. Open jeep safari passes through densely forested areas with increased chances of spotting tigers along with leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs and gaur.
Kolara is another famous zone after Moharli, with significant tiger population and distinct topography. Entries are through Madnapur, Shirkheda, Alizanza and Bellara gates. The zone is favoured for its quieter tracks and excellent wildlife sighting opportunities.
Navegaon is a popular core gate about 140 km from Nagpur. Only six safari vehicles are allowed per morning and evening slot. This area is rich in birdlife and supports nearly 60% of all bird species found across Maharashtra.
The Zari Safari Zone offers some of the best views of Tadoba with nearby stay options and visitor facilities. The Kolsa range can be entered through the Pangadi gate — only two jeeps per slot are permitted, making it an exclusive safari experience through core tourism areas.
Agarzari is a popular buffer tourism zone linked with the Moharli circuit. It offers excellent tiger and wildlife sightings with easier access and stays nearby. Buffer safaris here remain available year-round, including monsoon, when core gates follow seasonal restrictions — ideal for guests seeking flexible dates.
Alizanza is a key buffer entry connected to the Kolara range (along with Madnapur, Shirkheda and Bellara). The zone features quieter forest tracks with strong chances of tiger, leopard and deer sightings. A great choice when core permits are limited, with jeep safaris in morning and evening slots.
